Eating disorders 

 

Eating disorders can affect anyone and are extremely common, affecting millions of people each year. The main characteristic of an eating disorder is the individual’s obsession with their weight. These obsessive thoughts can lead to severe consequences in both their health and their actions.

Many people develop an eating disorder at any stage of life, though current statistics show young women and men are commonly affected. People suffering from an eating disorder focus and obsess around food, believing that by controlling food intake or weight they can rid themselves of the emotional pain they feel.

Eating disorder sufferers generally suffer from low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy. They use food as a coping mechanism to deal with difficult or painful emotions. Controlling food can help them feel more in control.
